RESTORED FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Restored Brighton’s fiscal integrity and stability and fixed an inherited structural budget deficit
Earned a high-level Moody’s credit rating upgrade to Aa3
Held average annual property tax increases to less than the rate of inflation since 1993
Reduced property tax four times
STRENGTHENED PUBLIC SAFETY:
Implemented Community Policing, put more officers on the street, and increased the uniformed force to 41
Implemented a Town Emergency Response Plan
Supported police department participation in the multi-agency Drug Task Force
Approved an active role in the County Task Force on Terrorism
Formed a Public Safety Committee to improve coordination between municipal and emergency services
Strengthened fire services and provided critically needed inter-municipal support for the West Brighton Fire Department
Created the Special Ambulance District to support volunteer ambulance services
CREATED A TOWN-WIDE PARK SYSTEM, EXPANDED RECREATION FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS:
Created a town-wide park system for active and passive recreation and to protect environmentally sensitive areas
Added and developing hundreds of acres - including Corbett's Glen Nature Park, Meridian Centre Park, Buckland Park, Lynch Woods Park, Persimmon Park, and Lawrence Stowell Nature Conservatory
Passed a public bond referendum by four-to-one with resident approval for a major town-wide parkland acquisition and development plan
Acquired and developed the Lehigh Valley Trail with a Federal Grant in cooperation with the Town of Henrietta
Improving the Erie Canal Trail with a $450,000 state-private grant
Partnered with the Brighton schools to build a new year-round community/school swimming pool
More than doubled recreational program offerings
SUPPORTED THE COMMUNITY'S OUTSTANDING SCHOOLS AND LIFELONG LEARNING:
Built a new library, doubling its size and adding public computers and children's discovery room
Increased staffing and the collection in the Brighton Memorial Library
Worked in close partnership with the Brighton schools, including creating an inter-municipal agreement for cooperative use of the new pool
UPDATED AND IMPLEMENTED THE COMMUNITY COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
TO PRESERVE THE RESIDENTIAL CHARACTER OF THE TOWN AND REVITALIZE COMMERCIAL DISTRICTS:
Updated the Comprehensive Plan and initiated an inter-municipal economic development effort to grow jobs in the town’s main
retail/commercial corridor
Instituted a Business Improvement District to help businesses save money on building and site improvements
ADDRESSED ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS RELATED TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING THROUGH "GREEN" INITIATIVES:
Established the Green Brighton Task Force to educate and guide actions that individuals, businesses, institutions and government can take to conserve energy, save money, reduce our community’s carbon footprint, and decrease our reliance on imported oil
Adopted a Tree Preservation Law, created a Tree Council, and implemented a tree planting program; received the designation of “Tree City U.S.A.”
Created Environmental Protection Overlay Districts
Acquired green space to create parks and preserve environmentally sensitive areas
Implemented water quality and watershed protection policies
Prohibited the use of pesticides on public property for general maintenance
